What is the difference between whitening and bleaching?
You know you need a solution to your less than vibrant teeth, but what are the differences between whitening and bleaching? According to the FDA, the term “bleaching” is permitted to be used only when the teeth can whiten beyond their natural color. This applies strictly to products that contain bleach – typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
“Whitening,” however, is a process that restores a tooth’s surface color by removing dirt and debris. There are many at home “whitening,” tools, such as toothpaste, white strips and other at home remedies, but many will not achieve the look you wish to have as it is not as bright as bleaching.
Most people start their lives with perfect, sparkling white teeth thanks to a perfect enamel surface. Composed of microscopic crystalline rods, tooth enamel is designed to protect teeth from the effects of chewing, gnashing, trauma and acid attacks caused by sugar. But over the years enamel is worn down, becoming more transparent and permitting the yellow color of dentin – the tooth’s core material – to show through.
Teeth bleaching or “whitening,” can be done by your dentist to achieve brighter teeth faster. The bleaching solution applied by dentists is much stronger and more efficient than any at home kits, and the combination of heat and light administered by a dentist makes it much speedier and more efficient to achieve the smile of your dreams.
The most dramatic and visible results in which teeth get three to eight shades brighter usually takes several 30 to 60 minute in-office visits. Some dentists can use techniques that can be done in a single 2-hour appointment.
